Troubleshooting Performance/McShield high CPU

Hi All,

This write-up is to discuss one of the most commonly seen issues and how we troubleshoot the same.

High CPU usage by mcshield.exe

Mcshield.exe is the primary process that takes up responsibility of 2 main functions of McAfee Endpoint Security:

  • On Access Scan
  • On Demand Scan

When we witness mcshield.exe process occupying high CPU Usage, it becomes extremely important to isolate which is the above functions is causing the problem, based on which we can proceed further with our troubleshooting.

Simplest way to do that is by checking for any running scans from the ENS console or by disabling On Access Scanner either via policy or via ENS console using Admin access.

If using the above, you see On Access Scan to be the reason behind High CPU Usage of mshield.exe, please visit the below page for more details on approaching and troubleshooting the issue and to know more about On Access Scanner in general:

Optimizing ENS On Access Scan

If you identify High CPU usage to be a consequence of On Demand Scan, please visit the below page for further assistance:
