I am not totally clear on what you are asking, but if you want the explanation of what extensions are vs packages, here is a quick rundown.
Extensions are basically the back-end management of the point products. When you check in a product extension, it adds client tasks (if relevant), policies, queries and other supportability info on managing the point product. That is entirely a server side function.
The packages are the install packages that get installed on the clients. The extensions that manage the products should be the same or higher version than the installed version on the client to ensure management compatibility. Packages are checked into the master repository whereas extensions are checked in under software, extensions.
