Unable to backup JRE Folder error during upgrade

Jump to solution

Trying to upgrade a very old instance of ePO 4.6.2 to 4.6.9 (an eventually higher) but I'm running into an error during setup which causes it to rollback.

The error .ini file from the McAfeeLogs directory spat out the following:

ErrorString=FAILURE: Unable to backup JRE folder.

  • Permissions are ok. I'm running the setup.exe as administrator as well.
  • I've checked to see KB83885
  • Installed jdk-7u80-windows-i586.exe as per KB89799 Any idea why the setup.exe cannot backup the JRE folder? Thanks!

If the isntaller is unable to back up a file or folder during an ePO upgrade it may be that another application has locked the file. You can use process explorer to see if there are any handles to this path.

This type of problem can also happen if the folder is being shared via windows file sharing.

To be certain that this is the error that resulted in the upgrade failure, please share a copy of the logs generated into the %temp%\McAfeeLogs folder during the upgrade.

You also might want to make sure there are no desktop shortcuts to folders, log files, etc by any users, or mapped drives.  Check for any open sessions to the server also - make sure no command prompt is open to the directory, any files open.

I'm unable to install Process Explorer on this server so I did the next best thing and simply shutdown all non-essential services. That did the trick!
